Abstract

This article is devoted to the civil war in Nigeria in the postcolonial period. One of the distinction of British colonial policy that they did not intervene and did not contribute to the development of democratic institutions in Nigeria. And the proof of this is the civil war that broke out in the years of independence. The civil war in Biafra is one of the most important conflicts in XX century, which has not yet found a solution. Problems of ethnic conflicts in Nigeria has a rich history that goes back deep into history. Nigeria is a modern state, which arose as a result of the colonial policy of the Western powers. Nigeria is home to over a dozen different tribes  speaking different languages and adhering to different religions. The colonial administration guided by the classical principle of "divide and rule" during the process of governance relied on the most powerful and influential tribe ignoring minority views that in the end led to the rise of the civil conflict
