Abstract

The article discusses various methods of teaching foreign languages in universities. Particular attention was paid to the following methods: the direct method, grammar-translation, audio-visual, audiolingual and communicative. Communicative method is used very often as the direct method is not so popular in higher education instituions. Communicative method aims to practice communication and is popular in Europe and the United States. The remarkable thing is that the majority of teachers in modern universities prefer the direct and communicative methods that are used in an intergrated manner. This allows to diversify the curriculum and motivate students, Oxford and Cambridge approaches to study language are given as examples. The article says that the use of audio, video and interactive resources is very popular nowadays.
