The idea and practice of the Eurasian Union in the foreign policy of Kazakhstan

Abstract

The consequences of the disintegration of the Soviet Union partly allowed the Commonwealth of Independent States, with all of its institutions, to mitigate the consequences of the SSSR break and maintain a certain level of cooperation between the new states. 1993-1994 was the period of the ways how to develop the CIS and the crisis solutions search. One of the options to optimize the integration process was the initiative to create the Eurasian Union (EAU) suggested by Nursultan Nazarbayev. The article reveals the Eurasian idea as a basis for the emergence of the EAU project, the basic principles and mechanisms of its formation, the parallelism of several integration projects in the CIS – EAU, EurAsEU, CAU coexistence. The author attempted to determine the prospects of the Eurasian project within the CIS.
