Abstract

Uzbekistan-India relations represent a distinctive case of enduring civilizational continuity combined with evolving contemporary cooperation. Rooted in centuries of interaction facilitated by the Silk Road, the relationship has been shaped by sustained exchanges in trade, culture, religion, art, and intellectual traditions. Following Uzbekistan’s independence in 1991, bilateral relations entered a new phase marked by formal diplomatic engagement, institutional cooperation, and expanding strategic dialogue. This paper examines the transformation of Uzbekistan-India relations in the post-Cold War era, with particular emphasis on political diplomacy, economic collaboration, security cooperation, and cultural and educational exchanges. It highlights India’s growing engagement in Uzbekistan in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, information technology, healthcare, education, energy, and capacity building, alongside Uzbekistan’s importance in India’s Central Asia policy. Furthermore, the study analyzes cooperation within multilateral frameworks, notably the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), where both countries share converging interests in regional stability, counterterrorism, and sustainable development. This paper examines the historical foundations of Uzbekistan–India relations and analyzes their contemporary engagements in political, economic, cultural, and security domains. It highlights that shared historical legacies continue to inform present-day cooperation, while new geopolitical and economic realities provide opportunities for deeper partnership in the 21st century.

Keywords: Silk Road, civilizational ties, Central Asia, contemporary diplomacy, strategic partnership.
